of the Week: |

I need your touch
O my Creator!
The Father’s touch of healing:
pain released
brokenness remade
the marred image restored.
The Son’s touch of love:
frozenness melted
loneliness assuaged
tears turned to laughter.
The Spirit’s touch of liberation:
freedom from the past
power for the present
courage for the future.
Touch me
O my Creator
that I may be transformed!

Missionary
Connection
At the February 23, 2010 meeting of Presbytery
it was
approved
that
the Presbytery of Detroit would become
a 100% supporter
of
the Missionary
Connection.
RATIONALE:
Years ago the PCUSA had a Personal Interest Program
(PIP)
which
assigned a missionary or couple or family to
each
congregation.
This program generated a great
amount of
information about our
PCUSA missionaries
across the
denomination. We’ve been asked
by the
World
Mission
Division in Louisville to connect again
with
someone on
the
mission field.
That is the purpose of this Missionary
Connection.
If you already have such a connection, please indicate
this on
the flyer.
If you would like a personal missionary,
just let
us
know and
Louisville
will connect you with
someone. We can all pray for our missionaries! Herein
lies the
power
of
our Missionary
Connection. |

The
Social Justice & Peacemaking Team endorses the
efforts
to renew the SMART millage, an issue which will
appear on many ballots
this August. We encourage our
Presbytery & congregation
members to prayerfully
consider giving it a "yes" vote.
Facts About SMART's Millage Renewal Election
August 3, 2010
- SMART's operations are partially funded with an
operating millage
of .59 mill. This millage is
assessed against property in the
counties of
Macomb, Oakland and Wayne. This millage
revenue,
approximately $52 million, makes up
about 42% of all revenue received
by SMART.
This funding is critical to SMART's operation
and to
public transit in Southeast Michigan.
- SMART's last millage campaign/election happened
in 2006. SMART
and public transit are clearly
valued and recognized as important to
the region,
its businesses and residents because the millage
passed
overwhelmingly. The average YES vote
was approximately 72% in
2006.
- Since 2006, public transit has only become even
more important. Gas
prices have spiked. Public
transit can save the average
rider thousands of
dollars in vehicle operation and maintenance
costs.
Appreciation and concern for our environment have
risen as well. Riding
public transportation is among
the most effective ways to positively
impact
congestion and reduce your impact on the
environment.
- The cost of supporting the SMART millage to an
average homeowner
in the suburban metro Detroit
area is very affordable. The
millage is assessed
against each thousand dollars in TAXABLE value
of the house. Assuming an average market value
of a home in the
3 county area served by SMART
is approximately $100,000, the taxable
value would
be $50,000. So, applying the .59 mill SMART
millage
against that $50,000 in taxable value
($0.59 times 50) results in a
cost of $27 per year
to support SMART operations and provide critical,
much needed public transit services to the region.
- The SMART millage renewal election is to be held
Tuesday, August
3, 2010.
Recap:
- .59 mill is the millage rate for SMART
- the election date is Tuesday, August 3, 2010
- the cost to an average homeowner in the 3 county
region is less than
$30 per year
- SMART is the ONLY regional transit authority in
Southeast Michigan
and this millage is critical!
